Embracing self-care with Ayurveda

Our bodies and thoughts can drift out of balance during the course of the year, just as our doshas can do. For example, when Pitta energy is high during the summer, we might need to focus on cooling practices and meals, whereas when Vata energy is strong in the winter, we may need to focus on grounding and warming practices and foods. Incorporating self- care into our seasonal diet, such as doing certain yoga or meditation techniques, and self-massaging every day with heated sesame oil (known as Abhyanga) can also go a long way.

For thousands of years, ayurvedic plants like triphala, ashwagandha, and turmeric have been used for enhancing overall health and well-being. We can help our bodies and minds in a natural and holistic way by incorporating these herbal supplements into our everyday routines. Ayurvedic practices such as mindful eating also play a vital role when it comes to dietary improvements. The foods we eat have an important effect on both our mental and physical well-being, according to Ayurveda, which believes that food is medicine. Foods are classified in Ayurveda based on their taste and quality, with every quality and flavor having a distinct impact on our doshas. We can prepare meals that optimize our general well-being by understanding which flavors and attributes balance our doshas. Eating in a calm, distraction-free environment is one method to engage in mindful eating with Ayurveda. It allows us to devote our full focus to our food and the way it nourishes both our bodies and opinions. Ayurveda also advises choosing meals that are naturally in sync with the energies of the season and the environment, such as foods that are grown locally and in season.
